Unlike the annuals, perennials return year after year, growing in size until they reach their full maturity. The term “perennial”, in some cases, also refers to woody plants like trees and shrubs. For our categorization, we have separated them. Our “perennials” are herbaceous plants; meaning that they are plants that have leaves and stems that die down at the end of the growing season to the soil level leaving no persistent woody stem above ground. Perennials grown and bloom over the spring and summer and then die back every autumn and winter.
